With the introduction of shear stress calculations it is now possible for a cross-section to have one grade for the High Flow Channel and another for the Main/Low Flow Channel. (The diagram on this page defines these terms.)
Due to sinuosity the grade of the Main/Low Flow Channel can be flatter (less) than the grade of the High Flow Channel, but the grade of the High Flow Channel cannot be flatter than the grade of the Main/Low Flow Channel.
The following diagram shows a meandering Low Flow Channel within a High Flow Channel, where the grade of the Low Flow Channel would be flatter (less) than the grade of the High Flow Channel.
